Our department’s faculty stands out from traditional applied mathematics or statistics programs by encompassing both fields. In addition to providing an educational environment that integrates applied mathematics and data science, the primary goal is to cultivate talent in mathematics education, applied mathematics, and data/statistical applications. Throughout their professional learning process, students are particularly trained in logical thinking and independent analysis skills, supplemented by computer software as a tool, to equip them with the core ability to solve real-world problems using mathematical or data science knowledge.

Our curriculum offers a diverse range of courses, including fundamental theoretical mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics. In recent years, we have also focused on scientific computing and artificial intelligence (AI) domains. Below is a brief overview of these fields:

1.Scientific Computing

It is often said that “mathematics is the mother of all sciences,” referring to how mathematical symbols, operations, and equations are the most general and rigorous language used to quantify and describe various disciplines and engineering problems. Scientific computing can be seen as the use of computers to perform complex mathematical operations with controlled errors. Traditionally, scientific methods have included theoretical analysis and experimentation. With the rapid development of modern computer hardware and software, scientific computing now stands alongside theoretical analysis and experimentation as the third essential component for solving problems. The primary process of using computers in research to explore scientific problems includes: observing phenomena, conducting experiments, and collecting data, establishing mathematical models, using numerical simulations to verify experimental data, and refining models to solve problems. Steps 3 and 4 illustrate the crucial role scientific computing plays, making it indispensable in many fields. Its applications impact daily life, such as weather forecasting, typhoon path predictions, energy consumption estimations, aircraft design, crash testing, pharmaceutical simulations, new material development, financial product pricing, and even nuclear test simulations. All these applications are made possible by scientific computing simulations.

2. AI Field

The era of AI is here, with continuous growth in job opportunities and salaries (search job boards for keywords like artificial intelligence, data science, or statistics). The “learning” aspect of AI involves using data to fit models and find correlations, which is essentially an optimization process. From these models, valuable applications such as analysis, classification, or prediction are derived. Our curriculum is designed to equip students with the concepts, knowledge, and software tools needed for the entire process, from data collection, cleaning, model selection, and evaluation to producing valuable analyses and forecasts. Not only in AI, but our social activities and natural phenomena are filled with randomness. Courses in mathematics and data science are perfect tools for uncovering the laws behind these random phenomena through data analysis.

Our faculty has extensive experience in teaching and research in mathematical theory, optimization, programming languages, scientific computing, statistical modeling, machine learning, and deep learning. They have also made outstanding research contributions in theoretical mathematics, industry, medicine, and biostatistics. Related elective courses are offered regularly. Students who choose this department will receive comprehensive training, and we are committed to nurturing the next generation of professionals.

4. Chang Yeo Lan Scholarship

The “Yeo Lan Scholarship,” currently the highest single scholarship amount in all universities and colleges in Taiwan, was established by alumnus Hsu Hang-Chien of the Department of Management Science with a donation of NT$120 million in 2020. It has benefited new students at Tamkang University since September 2021.Outstanding performance in the university’s Star Recommendation and admission application process, along with excellent entrance exam results while listing Tamkang University as the first choice for private universities, provides an opportunity to receive the Yeo Lan Scholarship of NT$200,000.
